Remember a time before aliens were scary and it was more about the awe of discovery and the wonder of the unknown? Films like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind all managed to capture these feelings without going the way so many alien films tend to go these days with pitched battles and overly elaborate plots of invasion. In most of these stories, the protagonists were children and you, the audience, were able to identify with that stage in childhood where everything new and exciting was a discovery. If you have not seen these classics, I would highly recommend you check your movie channels if you get your television through places like http://www.cable.tv/compare-providers/.

Super 8 is a call back to those classics and feels very much like the kind of alien movie your parents might have grown up with. While the story follows the kind of formula you might expect, it also deviates by shifting the focus mostly on the lives of a group of friends growing up and going on adventures together. Super 8, in many ways, is less about an alien incursion and more about the struggles and trials and tribulations of young love and growing up – a modern classic.

In 2007, J. K. Rowling released “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the final book in her Harry Potter epic. For avid readers, this marked the end of the Harry Potter series. However, the movies, the first of which was released four years after the first book, quickly gained a faithful following, so loyal Harry Potter fans knew that there was still more to come.

It wasn’t the same as still having the excitement of not knowing what was to come, but enthusiasts could still look forward to seeing how the writer and director chose to portray certain characters and events and debate over the merits of certain scenes being cut or changed and others added. Now, that’s all over.

Fans will certainly miss the series and the excitement of each new release. Nonetheless, the books and movies alike will continue to be popular, and tie-in merchandise will help to keep the series in the public eye. As a new generation emerges, excitement for Harry Potter may swell again. It will probably never quite match that initial excitement, but that should just make those who were lucky enough to live through Harry Potter as it was released feel very privileged.

2011 saw the release of four big-budget superhero movies. Which one takes the cape as the years best?

“Thor’: Newcomer Chris Hemsworth sold the title role, and the movie stayed true to its comic books origins. Director Kenneth Branagh gave the film a Shakespearean quality balanced with an agreeable mix of action and humor.

“X-men: First Class’: This film is both a franchise reboot and a prequel. The film-s Cold War storyline captured the imagination of audiences and critics, as did the quality of the cast and effects. It-s one of the best-reviewed films of 2011.

“ Green Lantern’: Most will agree that this was the worst superhero movie of the year. Packing too much comic book mythology into one film made the story difficult for audiences to follow, and many felt Ryan Reynolds was miscast in the title role.

“Captain America’: The WWII backdrop added some weight to the story, as did a strong supporting cast. Special effects helped sell Chris Evans as skinny Steve Rogers who is transformed into the muscular hero. Fast-paced with plenty of action, this might be the best ‘pure- comic book movie of the year. On that basis, give Cap the edge over “X-men’ as the best superhero film of 2011.

Here is a list of the top three best foreign films of 2011 in no particular order:

13 Assassins – Director Takashi Miike has crafted a story about a group of highly skilled samurai who have teamed up to kill a rival Lord who rapes and kills at will. No one is able to do anything about it, because the Lord is son to the current Shogun which makes him untouchable. These 13 Assassins team up to take on this Lord and his army at all costs. In the end, it’s more like 13 vs. 300. Saying there will be blood would be an understatement.

Julia’s Eyes (Los ojos de Julia) – Guillermo Del Toro produces this film which is directed by Guillem Morales. “Julia’s Eyes” tells the tale of Julia who’s blind twin sister is murdered by an unseen stranger. Julia also suffers from this degenerative eye disease and she too begins to get stalked by the same person who killed her sister. There are several homages to Alfred Hitchcock and Dario Argento throughout the film. “Julia’s Eyes” is a very cool thriller.

Incendies – “Incendies” is a film that chronicles the journey of a brother and a sister who take on the task of unraveling their mother’s mysterious life. The siblings are twins, and this journey that they will embark on is set in the Middle East, and is also in their mother’s final will and testament.
